As I drove in to Tournerbury Estate on Saturday, I was instantly whisked into a world of imagination. A red-headed pheasant insisted on running along the track to guide me to my destination, rather like one of the animal characters in Alice in Wonderland. Maybe he was my Avian toastmaster?! And no, I hadn’t consumed any mind-alter substances! This somewhat magical world just instantly got my creative juices flowing.
With this in mind I’m launching a new category of blog posts, the creative wedding design case study, to highlight the possibilities at some of the most amazing venues in the south of England. I’ll take the venue’s standard photos and then give you a mood board of some alternative approaches.
Tournerbury Estate (www.tournerbury.com
) is a rather unique, and undiscovered marquee venue down on Hayling Island near Portsmouth on the Hampshire / Sussex border, and is located within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It offers unparralled seclusion and privacy for a couple who value nature and the great outdoors. In fact, just driving over the bridge from the mainland makes you feel like you’re on holiday.
Apparently it’s the only venue in England to offer both woodland and seafront settings, which has formed the basis of my two suggested design options – nautical and woodland wonderland.
With a civil ceremony licence check out the two settings you could use to tie the knot…
Then you have their beautiful, fully equipped and lined marquee for your reception, which can seat 200+ guests for dining…
And when your celebrations finally draw to a close, it’s not far to stagger to the cute nineteenth century Tournerbury Woods Cottage which can sleep up to eight people. They’ve also been known to host glamping for guests.
So, here are my two alternative design options to inspire you if you’re using either Tournerbury Estate or somewhere similar (finding that will be a tough challenge).
OPTION 1: NAUTICAL NUPTUALS
I’m not going to go full-on sailor boy outfits here. The trick to a successful rather than tacky theme is to take inspiration from, rather than recreate, it’s all about subtlety! Some of the pictures are a little OTT on the theming, so check my comments out for how it could be toned down.
OPTION 2: WOODLAND WONDERLAND WEDDING
Woodland, doesn’t have to mean rustic and vintage. Check out my more glamorous approach.
